About this design
What the design shows
Long feathered wings extend upward and outward from a large central beetle. Each wing contains overlapping rows of narrow outlined feathers, leaving most of its surface open. The central insect is heavier: black shell sections surround curved pale channels and geometric compartments. Two long outlined shapes lie diagonally across its lower shell, with round openings near their upper ends. Above the shell, a dark rounded head and small curved projections complete the top. Jointed legs stretch from the body, some rising alongside the head and others curling beneath the shell. Two smaller solid-black beetles sit outside the central body under the wings, one on either side. The artwork has sharp black edges and clear internal spacing rather than grey gradients. In the chest image it spans the upper sternum, below the collarbones, with the central body descending between the pectorals.

Placement
Placement and size
Centered below the collarbones, the wings extend across the upper chest while the shell remains over the sternum. The preview is wider than a palm but relatively shallow. An upper back, lower abdomen or broad thigh offers similar horizontal room. Narrowing the wings to fit a forearm would crowd their stacked feathers. The tiny side beetles also need separate contours, so assess their spacing along with the main shell when adjusting the stencil.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
The dark shell gives this emblem a central anchor, while open feathers spread its weight gently toward the sides. Build a chest cluster above and below the wing line instead of packing objects immediately under every feather. Small round marks or sparse ornamental curves can relate to the shell compartments. Keep an uninterrupted skin border around each side beetle; merging them with nearby black pieces would obscure the three-insect arrangement.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small open circle above the central head
- A short ornamental curve below the shell
- A tiny outlined diamond beyond a wing tip
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Preserve both smaller side beetles as separate silhouettes.
- 02Review the feather spacing at the final chest width.
- 03Keep the pale shell channels continuous around the diagonal shapes.
