About this design
What the design shows
A slender snake rises from beneath a peony and bends into an S-shaped path around the flower. Its head appears above the upper petals, turned to the right with a visible eye, short forked tongue, and a pale throat. Small scales are individually marked along the darker back, then soften into light belly plates where the body crosses the bloom. The snake loops across the peony's lower left side before dropping beneath it in a loose curve that ends in a narrow tail. The flower is open and front-facing, with broad outer petals, tighter inner petals, and a clustered, dot-textured center. Pointed leaves spread behind the blossom, breaking the silhouette at the left and lower right. Black-and-grey shading follows the curve of each form rather than filling the background. In the preview, the whole composition sits vertically on the front of the lower leg, about the length of a hand.

Placement
Placement and size
The preview uses the front of the lower leg, letting the head sit above the flower and the thin tail drift toward the ankle. That upright movement also fits the outer calf, inner forearm, side rib, or upper arm. Choose a hand-length scale so the face, belly plates, and peony center have distinct marks. When it is made smaller, simplify the individual scales first and retain the larger light-and-dark bands that describe the snake's curve.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
The sinuous outline gives this piece medium visual weight and lets it bridge separate areas of a patchwork layout. Its top head and lower tail create natural directions for nearby designs, while the broad peony acts as the central mass. A small crescent near the raised head, a short botanical branch alongside the leaves, or a narrow ornamental charm below the tail can continue its movement. Avoid placing another busy curved animal immediately against it. Leave clear skin channels around the tongue, tail end, and leaf tips so the winding body does not blend into its neighbors.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small crescent beside the raised snake head
- A narrow thorn branch along the lower tail
- Three dotwork beads beneath the peony
- A tiny leaf cluster behind the left coil
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Keep the snake head facing right with the forked tongue separated from the muzzle.
- 02Ask for a scale pattern that follows the bends instead of forming straight rows.
- 03Retain a lighter belly where the snake crosses the peony's lower petals.
- 04Check the stencil curve on the calf so the tail does not disappear around the leg.
