About this design
What the design shows
Perched on a diagonal branch, the raven looks to the right with a broad pointed bill and a small bright ring around its dark eye. Short parallel strokes follow the head and neck, changing direction across the rounded breast. Layers of outlined feathers cover the folded wing, then lengthen into a darker tail that slopes down toward the right. Solid black at the belly and tail contrasts with the fine hatching over the upper body. Both feet wrap around branches, their curved toes and narrow claws visible below the breast. Bare stems fork around the bird, with long sharp thorns and open spaces between their tips. The composition is black and white, with a tall, irregular outline rather than an enclosing frame. In the back preview, the head lies between the shoulder blades and the tail and branches descend toward mid-back.

Placement and size
The preview places the raven upright across the central upper back, a little to one side of the spine as the tail angles outward. It occupies several hand lengths vertically. The calf, outer thigh or upper arm could carry the same perched silhouette at a reduced scale. Fine breast hatching and the claw outlines would need review first. Preserve the space between the bill and the nearest thorn, especially if fitting it into a narrower area.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
A dark lower wing and tail make the raven the visual anchor, while the open thorn branches extend a lighter perimeter around it. Other engraved nature pieces can sit outside that perimeter, with small leaves balancing the bare stems. Keep the gap in front of the bill open so the head remains readable. Neighbors should stop short of the thorn tips; connecting several outlines there would turn distinct branches into an accidental background.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small hatched leaf outside the lower branch
- An outlined feather below the tail
- A tiny crescent beyond the upper thorn tips
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Separate the breast hatching from the solid belly shadow.
- 02Check that both gripping feet remain legible on the stencil.
- 03Keep the raven facing right unless the surrounding arrangement calls for a deliberate flip.
