About this design
What the design shows
High raised wings form a broad V above the phoenix body, with pointed outer feathers rising toward the top corners. Red, orange and golden yellow fill the feather panels, while black shading gathers near their bases. Small muted green accents appear among the lower wing layers. The head faces left, with a hooked yellow bill, a dark eye and swept-back crest feathers. An orange chest narrows into a red body, and curled talons hang below it. Long trailing feathers fan down from the tail, ending in three prominent teardrop tips with dark eye-like centers and small green interiors. Heavy outlines keep the warm color sections distinct, and the pointed feather edges make an uneven outer silhouette. On the back, the wings spread between the shoulders and the long tail drops along the central back, larger than a palm.

Placement and size
The back preview sets the upper wing tips near the shoulder line and lets the tail reach toward mid-back. Its height is roughly twice the wing span. A broad thigh, upper arm or side of the torso could take a narrower version, but the long tail needs a planned endpoint. At reduced size, the small green eye centers and closely stacked wing feathers require simplification before the main red and gold shapes do.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
Warm saturated color and a large wing span make the phoenix a heavy anchor. Its tail pulls the arrangement downward, leaving smaller openings beside the lower body for separate traditional flash. A compact flame or broad leaf can echo the pointed edges. Leave the upper wing tips clear, and keep neighboring color patches outside the tail feathers so the three teardrop ends remain individually visible rather than becoming a shared colored border.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small gold flame outside the lower wing
- A red four-point spark beside the tail
- A broad green leaf below an outer tail feather
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Keep the three teardrop tail tips separated on the stencil.
- 02Discuss the red-to-gold shading within each wing panel.
- 03Check the crest and hooked bill at the intended upper-back size.
