About this design
What the design shows
The center of this design is a single open eye drawn with a thick almond outline. Inside it, the iris is a ring of short white spokes on solid black, around a round black pupil with one small white highlight in the upper right, which gives the eye a fixed, forward gaze. Above and below the eye, curved lid lines repeat the almond shape. The eye sits inside a diamond frame made of stacked triangles: two nested triangles point up, two point down, and on the left and right the frame ends in double chevrons that read like arrowheads. All lines are heavy and the black areas are fully packed, with no grey shading, so the design depends on clean contrast between black and open skin. On the hand preview it sits at the center of the back of the hand, just below the knuckle of the middle finger, about the width of two fingers.

Placement and size
The preview centers it on the back of the hand, a short way below the middle knuckle, where the skin is flattest. The diamond shape also fits the top of the foot, the center of the sternum, the back of the neck or the inside of the elbow. Hand skin turns over quickly and line work can spread there, so plan this size or a little larger rather than smaller, and expect touch-ups.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
This is a heavy, high-contrast piece and it will pull the eye first in any cluster. Use it as an anchor and keep lighter pieces at a distance so the solid black does not merge with neighbors. Its symmetrical diamond outline gives clean edges to align other pieces against. Small geometric fillers, dots and short lines sit well around it; detailed realism next to it tends to look busy.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A row of three solid black dots
- A small crescent moon in solid black
- Two short arrows pointing outward
- A tiny open triangle outline
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01On the hand, ask your artist whether the iris spokes need to be fewer and wider so they stay open.
- 02Keep the pupil highlight as clear skin; it is what gives the eye direction.
- 03The solid black areas should be packed evenly so they heal as one tone.
- 04Check the frame is centered on the hand, not on the image, before stenciling.
