About this design
What the design shows
A hummingbird hovers in side profile, facing right, with a long, straight black bill pointing forward. Its head and back are iridescent green, shaded from bright to dark to suggest the shine of feathers. The throat is a patch of ruby red built from small overlapping scales, and below it the chest is pale grey and white. One wing is lifted high behind the body, its long feathers drawn individually in warm grey with soft edges; the second wing is just visible behind it. The tail angles down to the left in dark, pointed feathers, and two tiny feet are tucked under the body. The rendering is color realism with smooth gradients and no black outline. There is no flower, branch or background, so the bird floats on open skin. On the forearm preview it is placed on the middle of the forearm, angled slightly upward, about palm-sized.

Placement
Placement and size
The preview sets it on the middle of the forearm, angled up toward the elbow. The diagonal flight line suits the forearm, the upper arm, the shoulder blade or the calf. Color realism needs room for its gradients, so palm size is a sensible minimum; a smaller version will lose the throat scales and wing feathers first. Flipping it to face the other way is a simple stencil change.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
The hummingbird is detailed and colorful but light at the edges, since it has no outline. In a patchwork it works well as a feature piece with simpler neighbors around it. Its bill points in one direction, so place the next piece where it seems to be flying toward, such as a single flower. Avoid crowding the wing tip, which is the softest edge in the design.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A single red hibiscus bloom
- A small fine-line flower stem
- Two small leaves in green
- A soft dotted flight trail
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Without an outline, the edges rely on contrast; discuss how the shape will hold up over time.
- 02Ask how the green and red will heal on your skin tone.
- 03The bill is thin and long; it may need a slightly firmer line.
- 04Confirm the flight direction before stenciling so it suits nearby pieces.
