About this design
What the design shows
Large curved mandibles rise above the head of this front-facing stag beetle, each carrying inward-pointing teeth. Their open center forms the tallest gap in the composition. Smaller antennae and angular upper legs spread below the mandibles. The body is divided into broad plates, with a dark outline and stippling that gathers near edges and joints. Two long wing cases meet along a straight central seam; their lighter inner surfaces contrast with the shaded borders. Lower legs bend outward from the shell and end in thin hooks. A pair of fern fronds curves upward from the lower sides, framing the legs with closely spaced pointed leaflets. Their dotted texture is lighter than the beetle outlines. The upper-back image centers the insect along the spine, with mandibles between the shoulder blades and fern tips extending around its lower half.

Placement and size
The back placement is centered and taller than a palm, with the mandibles pointing toward the neck. Its fern arcs make the lower half wider than the thorax. A calf, thigh or long outer-forearm space could carry that shape. Give the teeth inside the mandibles and the fern leaflets enough room; reducing the dots alone would not solve crowded outlines. Check the central wing-case seam against the body axis when setting the stencil.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
Dotted grey surfaces give the beetle medium visual weight, and the fern arcs create a soft lower frame around a much sharper insect. It can serve as an upright back anchor with smaller nature pieces off its sides. Avoid filling the space between the mandibles, which defines their shape. Light leaves or seed shapes outside the fern tips can extend the grouping, provided a clear gap separates them from the finely dotted foliage.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small seed pod outside the left fern tip
- A loose fern leaflet beneath the wing cases
- A thin crescent above the mandible opening
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Maintain the open gap between the toothed mandibles.
- 02Discuss dot density separately for the shell and the lighter ferns.
- 03Keep the central seam straight and the leg hooks distinct at the selected size.
