About this design
What the design shows
An eagle faces forward with both wings raised high and spread wide, the wing tips reaching out to the upper corners. Its feathers follow classic American traditional color: deep blue-grey feather blocks with white highlights, red and mustard-gold bands along the inner wing edges, and red tips on the outer flight feathers. The white head turns to the viewer's left, with a hooked yellow beak and a narrow, focused eye. The breast is covered in rows of scalloped blue feathers outlined in black. Below, two yellow talons grip at the sides, and the tail fans downward in long blue feathers finished with red and white bands. On either side of the talons, a yellow lightning bolt points diagonally down and outward. Every area is enclosed by a bold black outline and filled with flat color, with very little blending. On the chest preview it sits centered below the collarbones, wing tips spanning most of the chest.

Placement
Placement and size
The preview centers it on the upper chest, wing tips reaching toward the shoulders and the tail ending above the sternum's midpoint. This classic chest layout also works on the upper back, the stomach, or across the top of the thigh. The bold outline and flat color hold up well at large sizes; shrinking it to forearm width means simplifying the feather count.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
This is a heavy, saturated piece that defines the center of any chest or back layout. Traditional patchwork usually builds outward from a piece like this, with smaller flash such as daggers, roses, swallows or banners on the shoulders and ribs. Keep the outlines of neighbors as bold as this one so the set reads as one style, and leave a narrow skin border around the wing tips.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small traditional swallow on each shoulder
- A dagger through a rose below the sternum
- A short blank banner
- Two small red stars
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Keep the black outline bold and consistent; it holds the flat color in place.
- 02Ask your artist to use their own palette of blue, red and gold so it matches other traditional pieces.
- 03Mirror the lightning bolts exactly so the chest looks balanced.
- 04Count feathers with your artist; fewer, larger feathers age better than many small ones.
