About this design
What the design shows
A swallow flies toward the right with its pointed beak forward, a dark blue back across the center, and a forked tail swept up behind it. One wing stretches broadly to the left while the other rises behind the head, creating a sharp, open V around the body. Cream feather rows are separated by dark blue bands, and both wings finish with small mustard-yellow accents near their tips. A red throat and belly band sit under the blue body. Below the bird, a large red rose opens front-on, with darker red petal folds and a small curling center. Green leaves form a spiky ring around the flower, and the thorned stem points down beneath it. Thick black outlines contain all of the flat color. The calf preview stacks the swallow above the rose in a vertical composition about a hand long on the outer lower leg.

Placement
Placement and size
The preview uses the outer calf, where the bird's wings spread across the leg and the rose sits below it on the same vertical line. The shape also follows the outer forearm, upper arm, side thigh, or shoulder blade. Keep it around hand length so the rose center, thorned stem, and wing feather bands are clear. At a smaller size, reduce the feather stripes and use a simpler rose center before making the outlines too crowded.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
This design has medium-heavy weight because the bird and rose are both enclosed in bold black outlines and saturated color. Its stacked silhouette fills a tall gap especially well. Add similarly scaled traditional pieces to either side, such as a bent dagger, anchor, horseshoe, or small lightning bolt; avoid placing a wide round motif directly under the stem. A finger-width skin gap around the wing tips and leaf points gives the two subjects a clean border within a busier collection.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A small blue star near the raised wing
- A yellow lightning bolt beside the swallow tail
- A tiny red cherry pair below the thorned stem
- A narrow green leaf sprig beside the rose
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Keep the swallow's forked tail longer than the nearby wing feathers.
- 02Separate the cream feather rows with clean dark blue bands.
- 03Use a slightly thicker outline around the rose than inside its petal folds.
- 04Align the rose beneath the bird before transferring the full vertical stencil.
