I’ve been thinking about a Neptune tattoo lately, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you. This isn’t really a “tattoo ideas” post in the traditional sense, but rather an exploration of how I’d approach designing one if I were working with a tattoo artist.

The concept I’m interested in is a patchwork piece that includes several pieces of artwork that can be arranged into a cohesive design. I’ll be working on this as I go, so it’s very much a work in progress. But I thought I’d start by sharing what I have so far, and then ask your input and suggestions along the way.

Neptune and Poseidon in the Artist Brief

My favorite idea thus far is a Neptune tattoo. That’s not just because I love the sea, but also because I think Neptune is such a beautiful and interesting god. He was the Roman counterpart to Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. The Romans adopted many of the Greek gods and gave them new names. For the design, I’d use their shared trident as a starting point. So when the Romans adopted the Greeks’ gods, they gave them new names, but kept their imagery intact. And since Neptune and Poseidon are essentially the same deity, it makes sense that they would share the same imagery.

And that’s why I think it’s important to make sure that the artist knows exactly who you want to represent in your tattoo. For example, if you’re going for a sea god, there are plenty of options. But if you want to be specific, you might choose to represent Neptune specifically, or perhaps even a more modern interpretation of him. Either way, being explicit in the artist brief helps the artist know exactly what you want.

Neptune Tattoo Ideas With a Trident

So with that said, here are a few ideas that I could see myself using in a Neptune tattoo.

First, I’d consider a simple trident-only emblem. It’s clean, classic, and has a timeless look. If I were to use this style, I’d probably go with a minimalist version.

Another option would be to simply crop out the rest of the figure, leaving only the head and shoulders of Neptune holding his trident. This would give the impression of a standing figure, while keeping things simple.

Neptune Battling an Octopus

I think my favorite idea, however, is Neptune battling an octopus. I think it’s a unique combination that adds a lot of interest to the design. Neptune holds his trident high, ready to strike down the octopus. His stance is determined, and he looks like he’s ready to take on whatever challenge comes his way.

This type of scene is reminiscent of the Fountain of Neptune (Fontana di Nettuno) in Piazza Navona in Rome. The fountain was designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575, and it was originally built without the statue of Neptune at its center. The statue was added later by Antonio della Bitta in 1878. You can read more about the history of the fountain in Cassandra Goad’s The Tale of the Trident.

But I think the reason this particular sculpture caught my attention is because of the way Neptune is depicted. He’s shown in the middle of battle, holding up his trident as he faces off against an octopus. The octopus appears to be attacking Neptune from below, and Neptune is ready to strike back.

It’s a very dramatic scene, and it gives me quite a bit to work with in terms of creating a Neptune tattoo. His sea connection comes from mythology. Courage or my own connection to the ocean would be meanings I’d bring to it, rather than traditional tattoo symbolism.

Fitting the Design Into My Patchwork

If I were to do this, I’d probably simplify the details a bit, and maybe add some color to the background. But other than that, I’d stick pretty close to the original design. To fit an opening in my patchwork, I’d bring measurements and photos of the neighboring tattoos. I’d ask the artist about detail, orientation, style, and how much space to leave around it. That way, I could plan the collection one piece at a time. Any AI-generated version would just be a concept to work through with the artist.

What do you think? Is this something that interests you? Are you looking for ideas for a Neptune tattoo? If so, please let me know!
