About this design
What the design shows
This design is two separate shapes stacked one above the other. At the top is a koi seen from above, drawn in a few thin, broken black lines. Its tail fin sits highest and splits into two soft points, the body curves down in a gentle S, and the head points downward with a small dark eye on one side. Two pairs of pectoral and pelvic fins flare out from the sides, and a couple of short interior lines suggest the spine and scale pattern without filling them in. Below the head, separated by a clear stretch of skin, is a set of concentric ripple rings: two complete circles with a thinner partial ring between them, as if the fish has just touched the surface. The whole piece is linework only, with no shading, color or background, and the empty space between fish and ripple is part of the composition. On the leg preview it runs down the back of the calf.

Placement and size
The preview places it vertically along the back of the calf, koi above, rings below, filling about two thirds of the calf's height. That long, narrow layout also fits the outer forearm, the spine or the side of the ribs. Keep the gap between fish and rings; shortening it to fit a smaller area makes the two shapes read as one cluttered mark.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
This is a very light piece with a long vertical line, so in a leg patchwork it acts as a quiet column beside denser pieces. The open space between the fish and the ripple should stay clear of fillers. Other single-line nature pieces, small waves or lotus outlines match its weight. Placing a heavy color piece right next to it will make the fine lines look unfinished.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A single lotus flower in outline
- Two small water droplets
- A short horizontal wave line
- A tiny fine-line bubble cluster
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01The koi lines are intentionally broken; agree with your artist where the gaps stay.
- 02Keep the ripple rings perfectly round; distortion on a curved calf is easy to spot.
- 03A slightly heavier line than the preview will help it hold up on the leg.
- 04Check the head-down direction is what you want; it can be flipped to swim upward.
