About this design
What the design shows
A compact peony fills the center of this hand-sized design, viewed directly from above so its petals open in a broad round stack. The outer petals have softly scalloped edges and fine vertical texture lines, while the inner petals curl inward around a dense cluster of short, dark strokes. Shading gathers in the folds between layers, leaving the petal surfaces comparatively pale. Three small four-point stars sit in the open skin around the bloom: one at the upper left, one at the right edge, and one below the flower. Each star has a dark center that tapers into long horizontal and vertical points, giving the small accents a sharper geometry than the rounded petals. The linework is black and grey with no filled background or stems. In the preview, the peony lies across the middle of the back of the hand, with the three stars spaced between the knuckle area and wrist rather than tucked into the flower.

Placement
Placement and size
The preview places the bloom at the center of the back of the hand, with the upper star pointing toward the index-knuckle side and the lower one toward the wrist. Its rounded outline also works on the inner wrist, top of the foot, shoulder cap, or a small space on the upper arm. Keep the flower around palm-center size so the separate petal layers still show. At a smaller scale, the many short marks in the center and the narrow star points will be the first features to simplify.
Patchwork
Building it into a patchwork
This is a light-to-medium round focal point, with the three stars extending its footprint into otherwise unused space. It works in a hand collection where compact designs need clear edges, or as a small floral node between larger pieces. A fine crescent, a short vine segment, or a tiny framed initial can sit beyond one star without crowding the peony. Do not place another circular flower directly beside it, since the scalloped outline needs a clean perimeter. Keep a small skin gap around every star point and the outermost petals.
Small pieces that pair with it
- A fine crescent beyond the right-side star
- A short vine segment near the wrist-facing star
- A tiny framed initial beside the upper-left star
- Three small dots following the flower's lower curve
For your artist
Notes for your tattoo artist
- 01Position the three stars before stenciling so they stay outside the peony outline.
- 02Keep the upper-left star smaller than the bloom and clearly separated from it.
- 03Use fewer center strokes if the hand placement requires a smaller peony.
- 04Follow the hand's natural centerline so the flower does not drift toward one finger.
